Devoted Kingdom Living

Lesson Two - Summary and Questions to Consider

What does it truly mean to be born again? That question, posed by a religious ruler who came seeking answers under the cover of night, opens one of Scripture's most profound conversations. In John chapter 3, Nicodemus brings his credentials, his theological training, and his honest confusion to Jesus, and what he receives in return reshapes everything. This lesson draws us into that dialogue and challenges us to sit with the same questions Nicodemus carried. The central revelation is this: spiritual birth does not derive from natural life. It is something altogether different, something that originates from above and works its way outward into how we speak, how we love, and how we respond to the world around us. The Holy Spirit is the agent of this transformation, and the Kingdom of God is the destination that transformation is moving us toward. We are not becoming born again. We are already born again. That settled identity is the foundation from which devoted living flows, and this lesson shows us what that foundation looks like when built carefully and with intention.

1. Nicodemus was a respected religious teacher and ruler, yet he struggled to comprehend what it meant to be born again -- in what ways do religious traditions and spiritual understanding sometimes operate independently of one another, and what does that tension reveal about the nature of faith?

2. The lesson emphasizes that believers are already born again rather than in the process of becoming so -- how does settling that truth in your own heart change the way you approach your daily walk with God?

3. Jesus drew a parallel between Moses lifting up the serpent in the wilderness and His own being lifted up on the cross -- what does that Old Testament image teach us about the nature of healing, belief, and salvation?

4. The lesson describes devotion as the underlying motivation from which Kingdom living flows -- what does genuine devotion to God look like in your own life, and how do you distinguish it from religious routine or habit?

5. The lesson uses the image of soil and water to describe how the word of God reaches and softens the heart -- what conditions in your life have either hardened or softened your heart to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit?

6. Romans 8:29 teaches that believers are predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ -- what does it mean to cooperate with that process, and where do you find the greatest resistance to that conformity in yourself?

7. The lesson argues that Kingdom living is foreign to the secular world in the way believers respond to offense, conflict, and persecution -- can you identify a specific moment when you responded to a difficult situation in a way that reflected spiritual growth?

8. The lesson draws a distinction between the fullness of God's nature already present within the believer and the progressive journey of becoming more like Christ -- how do you hold both of those realities in tension without using one to excuse the neglect of the other?

9. The lesson compares spiritual disciplines like prayer and Bible study to physical exercise, arguing that godly output requires godly investment -- what specific disciplines have produced the most visible transformation in your life, and which ones have you been neglecting?

10. John 3:17 reveals that God sent Christ not to condemn the world but to save it -- how does understanding the redemptive purpose of God reshape the way you engage with people who do not yet know Christ?
