Many people started in the Christian faith and, during their experience, turned back. There are many reasons why this happens. Here are a few:
1. "Being a Christian is too hard..." The way of life for a Christian is modeled for us by Jesus Christ. As we read the bible, we learn how Jesus lived his human life while maintaining spiritual values. Far too many people in the church mistake a new, fulfilling, and joyous life in Christ with one that is restrictive. When this happens, it takes the joy out of living this new life. When God's Spirit lives within our hearts, it's not about restricting ourselves from old sinful behaviors. We no longer desire or have an appetite for the former sinful lifestyles. God does not force us to change; instead, our hearts become increasingly devoted to Him, and in return, we grow in the image of His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29).
What you need to know - No one changes overnight. It does not work that way. Your desire for the Lord increases as you pray, learn more about Him from the Bible, attend church regularly, and gather with fellow Christians. The change or transformation occurs in your heart, and you will notice a positive difference for good. It's not grievous but exciting as you recognize spiritual and personal growth.
2. "I can't measure up to the church's standards" The church is an evolving and perpetual gathering under God's Grace. Each believer is developing in the image of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). The standard of God evolves in the believer's life through Christian Discipleship. This is vital to helping believers avoid self-condemnation, learn how to live for the Lord and develop a foundation. In addition, the church is an atmosphere where we help one another with personal challenges. It is not a place driven by rules but teaches believers to develop a fulfilling relationship with Jesus Christ.
What you need to know - Followers of Jesus Christ experience challenges at some point in their spiritual journey. Understanding that God is our helper and will not cast us away is essential. His involvement with us as our loving Heavenly Father gives us the strength to overcome all obstacles. While God will not bend or compromise His Word, He will offer His Grace in allowing us the opportunity to rise above each challenge.
3. "God won't forgive me if I have a moment of weakness" Somehow, people have convinced themselves they must be perfect. Some have even thought that God would punish or condemn them for having a moment of weakness.
What you need to know - God has made a covenant with each of His children through the life of Jesus Christ. The enemies of guilt and fear no longer have a hold on God's people. We have the freedom to experience a progressive and growing relationship with Him. Our devotion to God is not based on a list of rules. It is from the heart that we live for Him.
See What God's Word says in 1st John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Pray and return to the Faith "Father God, I come to you in the Name of Jesus. I repent of my sins and ask that you forgive me. I rededicate my life back to you. Father God, I have never stopped believing or loving you. I am returning to the Christian Faith and to continue my relationship with you! In the Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen!"
Tip#1
Become a part of a church fellowship, and do not dwell on why you left. Be determined to live for the Lord and remember the church is not perfect; therefore, do not allow its imperfections to drive you away.
Tip #2
Devote time for daily prayer because this will help center you and keep you focused on the Lord. Remember, He is right there with you.
Tip #3
Stay in the Bible! Read and Study it because this will feed your thoughts and train your mind with the words of the Lord. The Bible will give you the confidence and strength to live successfully as a Christian.
Tip #4
Connect or reconnect with fellow Christians who are sincere for the Lord. This is important because it will help strengthen your faith and reinforce spiritual values.
Tip #5
Decide to modify ungodly/unhealthy habits, atmospheres, and social outlets because these things will not help your sincere desire to live for the Lord.
